“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” is the action-adventure series about five teenagers chosen to defend Earth from Rita Repulsa and her army of monsters. When danger strikes Angel Grove, five teenagers morph into the Power Rangers, pilot giant battle machines called Zords and combine their powers to stop Rita’s attacks before she can conquer the planet.
Premiering on NBC in 1993, “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” launches the “Power Rangers” franchise and quickly becomes a major pop-culture phenomenon. The series originally debuts on August 28, 1993, runs through 1995, and is created by Shuki Levy and Haim Saban, adapting footage and concepts from Toei’s Japanese “Super Sentai” productions into an American live-action superhero series. Within its first months on the air, the show becomes one of the biggest hits in children’s television.
The series centers on the Command Center, where the wise Zordon and his robotic assistant Alpha 5 guide the Rangers in their fight against Rita. Jason leads the team as the Red Ranger, Zack brings his style and confidence as the Black Ranger, Kimberly serves as the Pink Ranger, Billy is the brains of the group as the Blue Ranger, and Trini rounds out the original lineup as the Yellow Ranger. Early in the series, Rita creates Tommy Oliver as the evil Green Ranger, but he eventually breaks free of her control and becomes one of the team’s most important allies.
As the show continues, the cast and mythology expand. Jason David Frank joins the ensemble as Tommy, whose popularity helps make the Green Ranger and later White Ranger one of the franchise’s defining heroes.
“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” is produced by Saban Entertainment and becomes the foundation of a long-running franchise spanning multiple television series, films, comics and merchandise lines. Blending superhero action, teen friendship stories and footage adapted from Japanese tokusatsu television, the series establishes the formula that defines “Power Rangers” for decades to come.
