Grant Show, Josie Bissett, Thomas Calabro, Doug Savant, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Andrew Shue and Vanessa A. Williams opened the series of “Melrose Place,” the primetime drama about a group of young adults navigating love, ambition and betrayal while living in a West Hollywood apartment complex.
Premiering on FOX in 1992 as a spinoff of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Melrose Place” evolves from a relationship-driven ensemble drama into one of the network’s signature nighttime soaps. The series runs for seven seasons, becoming known for its shocking twists, romantic entanglements and high-stakes rivalries. Heather Locklear joins the cast during the first season as Amanda Woodward, a character whose arrival marks a turning point in the show’s tone and popularity.
The series centers on the residents of 4616 Melrose Place, whose apartments surround a shared courtyard and pool. Jake Hanson (Show) is a motorcycle-riding handyman with complicated romantic ties, including his relationship with aspiring writer Alison Parker (Thorne-Smith). Billy Campbell (Shue), Alison’s on-again, off-again love interest, works in advertising alongside her, while Michael Mancini (Calabro), a young doctor, navigates a volatile marriage to Jane Mancini (Bissett), a fashion designer.
Rounding out the ensemble are Matt Fielding (Savant), a social worker facing personal and professional challenges, and Rhonda Blair (Williams), an aerobics instructor pursuing her own ambitions. As careers rise and fall and relationships fracture and reform, “Melrose Place” follows the intertwined lives of its residents as they chase success and struggle with the consequences of their choices.
The series is created by Darren Star and developed for television by Darren Star and Charles Pratt Jr. “Melrose Place” is produced by Spelling Television and becomes one of the defining primetime dramas of the 1990s.
